1. Plywood Sheet Estimation and Wastage Allowance
Plywood in India is sold in standard dimensions, measured in feet. The most common sheet sizes are:
- 8 x 4 feet (32 Sq Ft) - The global industry standard for wardrobe doors, partitions, and large panels.
- 7 x 4 feet (28 Sq Ft) - Often used for flush doors and medium-sized cabinets.
- 6 x 4 feet (24 Sq Ft) and 6 x 3 feet (18 Sq Ft) - Typically used for custom table tops, shelving, or small furniture pieces.
When cutting rectangular sheets to fit custom spaces (such as kitchen drawers, corner racks, or custom wall paneling), wood is lost due to cutting patterns. We recommend a 10% wastage allowance for standard rectangular designs, and up to 15% or 20% for complex angular woodwork.
2. How is Sawn Wood (Plank) Volume Calculated?
For rectangular blocks of solid wood, planks, columns, or beams, the volume is computed in Cubic Feet (CFT). The formula is:
Why divide by 144? Width and thickness are usually measured in inches, while length is measured in feet. To convert square inches of cross-sectional area (Width × Thickness) into square feet, we divide by 144 (since 1 Sq Ft = 12 in × 12 in = 144 Sq in).
3. What is the Hoppus Rule for Round Timber Logs?
When buying raw, circular timber logs from depots, calculating exact volume is challenging due to the round shape and bark wastage. In India and Commonwealth countries, timber dealers use the Quarter Girth Formula (Hoppus Rule):
Where Girth is the circumference of the log measured at the exact midpoint. Dividing girth by 4 yields the "quarter-girth" (QG). Squaring it and multiplying by length gives a conservative estimation of the rectangular wood yield that can actually be sawn from the circular log, automatically discounting corner slab wastage.
